Brentwood grew as a stopping place on the road out of London, first with a chapel for pilgrims bound for Canterbury and later with the coaching trade. Today it is a busy commuter town, with Shenfield and Hutton Mount to the north-east. Many Hutton Mount roads, among them Mount Avenue and Roundwood Avenue, form a private estate. Brentwood School, founded in the reign of Mary I, teaches children from 3 to 18 on Ingrave Road, and Brentwood Cathedral is the seat of the Catholic diocese. The A12 runs past the town as the Brentwood bypass, meeting the M25 at junction 28 by Brook Street, and the A1023 runs from that roundabout through the High Street towards Shenfield. Shenfield station is one of the two eastern ends of the Elizabeth line, with Greater Anglia trains to Liverpool Street, Chelmsford and the Southend branch, and Brentwood station is on the Elizabeth line too. - The Brook Street roundabout at M25 junction 28 handles the A12, the M25 and local traffic on the A1023, so we time London and Heathrow departures around its busy periods.
- From Shenfield and Hutton Mount, the A12 junction at Mountnessing gives a way onto the A12 towards Chelmsford without crossing Brentwood town centre.
