Our service in Barnes
Barnes sits inside a loop of the Thames, a village of green, pond and riverside streets, with Castelnau running north towards the river. Two large independent schools share Lonsdale Road: St Paul's School with its prep school, and the Harrodian, built on the old Harrods staff sports ground. We cover school runs, early Heathrow departures and evenings at Olympic Studios on Church Road, where the old recording studio is now a cinema, bistro and members' club.
Getting around Barnes changed when Hammersmith Bridge closed to motor traffic in 2019. It is open again to people on foot and on bikes, but cars now cross the river by Putney Bridge or Chiswick Bridge. The A306 runs through Barnes as Castelnau and Rocks Lane, and Church Road links the village with Mortlake. Barnes and Barnes Bridge stations both have South Western Railway trains to Waterloo. Heathrow is the nearest airport, and Gatwick and London City are regular runs too.
Boat Race day is the biggest in the Barnes year. The Championship Course loops round the village, with crews passing under Hammersmith Bridge and through the centre arch of Barnes Railway Bridge before the finish below Chiswick Bridge. In July, Barnes Fair takes over Barnes Green, and the WWT London Wetland Centre on Queen Elizabeth Walk draws visitors all year. St Paul's runs its own coach service, and we look after the families who prefer a car to the door.
Notable places in Barnes
- School
St Paul's School
Senior and prep schools at Lonsdale Road, SW13 9JT; the main entrance on Lonsdale Road is open early until late in term time, and car parks with attendants serve parents and visitors.
- School
Harrodian
Co-educational day school for ages 4 to 18 at Lonsdale Road, SW13 9QN, on the site of the sports club Harrods built for its staff in 1904.
- Landmark
WWT London Wetland Centre
On Queen Elizabeth Walk, SW13 9WT, open every day except Christmas Day; its car park uses number-plate cameras, so a car that drops you at the entrance skips registering at the desk.
- Venue
Olympic Studios
Cinema, bar and bistro and members' club at 117-123 Church Road, SW13 9HL, in the former studio where the Beatles began recording All You Need Is Love, with drop-off at the door.
- Station
Barnes Bridge station
South Western Railway station named after the railway bridge whose centre arch the Boat Race crews must pass through, and very busy on race day.
- Station
Barnes station
South Western Railway station with trains to Waterloo via Clapham Junction, linked to Station Road by a public footbridge.
Local knowledge
Events in the diary
The Boat RaceLate March or April
The Thames, Putney to Mortlake
Crowds line the Barnes riverside, so on race day we set down and collect on streets back from the towpath and away from Barnes Bridge.
Barnes FairJuly
Barnes Green
Run by the Barnes Community Association on the green, so on fair day we pick up a street or two away from the crowds.
On the road
- Hammersmith Bridge has been closed to motor traffic since 2019 and is open only to pedestrians and cyclists, so trips north of the river go by Putney Bridge or Chiswick Bridge, chosen by the traffic on the day.
- The A306 runs through Barnes as Castelnau and Rocks Lane, while Church Road and Barnes High Street link the village to Mortlake. We know both routes and pick the clearer one on the day.
Questions about Barnes
How do you get from Barnes to north of the river with Hammersmith Bridge closed?
By Putney Bridge or Chiswick Bridge, depending on traffic on the day. Hammersmith Bridge has been closed to cars since 2019, though it is open on foot and by bike.
Can you do the St Paul's or Harrodian school run?
Yes. Both schools are on Lonsdale Road. St Paul's opens its main entrance there early in term time and has staffed car parks; tell us the school and the times and we handle the rest.
Can I get to the Boat Race by car?
Yes, but not to the riverbank. On race day we set you down on a street back from the river and agree a pickup point for afterwards, away from the crowds on the towpath and around Barnes Bridge.
Can you collect from the London Wetland Centre?
Yes. It is on Queen Elizabeth Walk, SW13 9WT, and opens daily except Christmas Day. Tell us when you plan to leave and the chauffeur meets you at the entrance.
