Our service in St Albans

St Albans became a city in 1877, when the old abbey church was made a cathedral. Verulamium, its Roman predecessor, was the second-largest town in Roman Britain, and the Clock Tower, built between 1403 and 1412, is the only surviving medieval town belfry in England. Two independent schools sit close to the centre. St Albans School stands at the Abbey Gateway beside the cathedral and took girls into its first Year 7 in September 2026, while St Albans High School for Girls has its senior school on Townsend Avenue.

St Albans City station on Station Way has Thameslink trains south through central London to Gatwick and north to Luton and Bedford, and it has lifts to every platform. St Albans Abbey station, on Holywell Hill, is the end of the branch line from Watford Junction. By road, the A414 runs along the south side of the city, the M25 has junctions 21A and 22 nearby, and the M1 is reached at junctions 6, 7 and 9. Luton is the closest airport, with Heathrow and Stansted both on the M25.

Sopwell House on Cottonmill Lane is a five-star hotel with a spa, two restaurants and its own wedding packages. Verulam Golf Club on London Road calls itself the home of the Ryder Cup, because its captain Samuel Ryder, a St Albans seed merchant, gave the trophy in 1927. Each June the cathedral's Alban Pilgrimage brings giant puppets through the streets to retell the story of Britain's first saint. We also drive St Albans residents to theatres and restaurants in London and back at the end of the night.

  • Alban PilgrimageJune

St Albans city centre and Cathedral

Giant carnival puppets process through the centre to the cathedral; streets near the route are busy, so we agree a collection point away from the procession.

On the road

  • The street market sets up around St Peter's Street and Market Place every Wednesday and Saturday, so on those days we plan pickups in the centre around the stalls.
  • The A5183, the old line of Watling Street, runs north-west from the city towards junction 9 of the M1, which gives us another route north towards Luton.

Questions about St Albans

Where can you drop us for a service at St Albans Cathedral?

There is no visitor parking at the cathedral and the entrance is through the Welcome Centre in Sumpter Yard. We set you down as close as the streets allow and return at the time you give us.

Do you run pupils to both STAHS sites?

Yes. The senior school is on Townsend Avenue in St Albans and the prep is in Wheathampstead, so we confirm the site with you for each journey.

Can you bring guests to a wedding at Sopwell House?

Yes. The hotel on Cottonmill Lane has its own wedding spaces, and we can collect guests from St Albans City station or from home and take them back at the end of the night.

Is it easier to take the Thameslink or a car to Luton from St Albans?

Thameslink runs to Luton Airport Parkway, where you change to the DART shuttle for the terminal. A car goes straight to departures, which helps with an early flight or a lot of luggage.

Can you get us to the city centre on market days?

Yes. The market runs every Wednesday and Saturday around St Peter's Street, and we agree a convenient pickup point just off the market streets.
