Totteridge is a former village in the London Borough of Barnet, set on high ground between the Dollis Brook and the Folly Brook. Much of it has been a conservation area since 1968, and its large detached houses are among the most expensive in London. St Andrew's Church on Totteridge Village has a churchyard yew thought to be around 2,000 years old, often called the oldest tree in London. Whetstone, to the east, grew up along the old Great North Road and shares the N20 postcode.
One road ties the area together. The A5109 runs east to west as Totteridge Lane, Totteridge Green, Totteridge Village and Totteridge Common, and meets the A1000 High Road in Whetstone. Totteridge and Whetstone station, on the High Barnet branch of the Northern line, sits on the north side of Totteridge Lane, while Oakleigh Park station to the east is on the Great Northern route. For flights, the M25 and M1 lead to Heathrow, Luton and Stansted, and we pick the route on the day.
South Herts Golf Club, founded in 1899, sits at the end of Links Drive, and its two courses, the Vardon and the Rees, take their names from two of its former professionals, Harry Vardon and Dai Rees. - Totteridge Lane is the main road through Totteridge and also carries the buses to the station, so we allow for queues where it meets the High Road in Whetstone at school times.
- Hendon Wood Lane turns north from the traffic lights at the western end of Totteridge Common, which gives us a way out of Totteridge that avoids Whetstone altogether.
