Our service in Eton and Dorney

Eton is a small town on the north bank of the Thames, and its High Street climbs from Windsor Bridge to Eton College, founded by Henry VI in 1440. The Christopher Hotel, a former coaching inn dating from 1711, stands on the same street. Further west, in Buckinghamshire, the village of Dorney has Dorney Court, an early Tudor manor house the Palmer family bought in 1624 and still live in. Close by is Dorney Lake, the rowing course that Eton College built and completed in 2006, which staged the 2012 Olympic rowing and canoe sprint events.

No vehicles cross the Thames directly between Windsor and Eton, because Windsor Bridge carries pedestrians only, so cars come in by Royal Windsor Way, the relief road opened in 1966, or from Slough. Parking near the college is very limited and coaches are kept off the High Street. For Dorney Lake, the published approach leaves the M4 at Junction 7 and follows the A4 and the B3026 to Court Lane. Heathrow is the nearest airport, and the college's own visitor advice suggests taking the train to Slough and continuing by car.

The school calendar drives much of the travel here. The Fourth of June, St Andrew's Day in late November and exeat weekends bring parents to the college, and term ends mean trunks, tuck boxes and flights home. At Dorney Lake, the National Schools' Regatta fills three days in late May, and the Marlow Regatta now races there in June, alongside triathlons and running events through the year. Dorney Court opens for tours, weddings and private events, and we drive guests to and from all of them.

    Eton College

Parking near the college is very limited and coaches cannot use the High Street, so we set you down as close as the streets allow; the School Office postcode for sat nav is SL4 6DW.

  • Venue

    Dorney Lake

Entered from Court Lane, off Lake End Road (SL4 6FJ), with free on-site parking; the venue publishes entire.vibes.sport as its what3words address, which helps on busy regatta days.

    Dorney Court

A Grade I listed Tudor manor on Court Lane, Dorney, still the Palmer family home, which hosts weddings, tours and filming; give us the start and finish times and we plan guest runs to match.

Events in the diary

  • Fourth of JuneSummer term, usually June

    Eton College

The college's summer celebration for parents closes with the Procession of Boats at Fellows' Eyot, so we set the collection for after the boats.

  • St Andrew's DayLate November

    Eton College

Exhibitions open to families and the Wall Game is played on College Field; parking is scarce, so we agree a pickup point near the High Street in advance.

  • National Schools' RegattaLate May

    Dorney Lake

Three days of junior racing with more than a thousand crews, so we plan arrival early before the lake approach fills with traffic.

  • Marlow RegattaJune

    Dorney Lake

Held at Dorney Lake rather than on the river at Marlow, in the run-up to Henley; the chauffeur can wait or return after your crew's last race.

On the road

  • Cars cannot cross Windsor Bridge, so any pickup on the Windsor side for Eton goes round by road, and we allow for the detour when timing school collections.
  • For Dorney Lake we leave the M4 at Junction 7, follow the A4 towards Maidenhead, then take the B3026 and turn into Court Lane, the route the lake's event organisers publish.
